Clay 3d render Close up of Mary, partially veiled in a dark stone chamber illuminated by symbolic light and shadow

This 3D artwork was commissioned by a client seeking a faithful yet interpretative translation of Simon Bisley’s iconic illustration Mary into a fully realized digital scene. The project aimed to capture the raw, symbolic power of the original while expanding it into a richly detailed, cinematic 3D environment.

Set in a dim, monastic chamber bathed in warm torchlight and moonlit beams, the composition centers on a female figure partially draped in ornate fabric, her body vulnerable, yet shielded by a surreal metallic veil. Her posture is reverent and inward, caught in a moment of divine confrontation. Above her, an otherworldly, angelic entity descends from the shadows, torch in hand, rendered with fluid, fabric-like anatomy and divine menace echoing the original’s mythic ambiguity.

This interpretation preserves the emotional tension and painterly quality of Bisley’s work, reimagining it with photorealistic lighting, symbolic staging, and deeply atmospheric mood. Every detail from the texture of stone walls to the symbolic elements like bread and candle were crafted to honor the reverence and strangeness of the moment.
